communication capacities.

Overall Objective
UNESCO's overall objective through its current programme of work, Major Programme V on Communication and Information (CI) is to promote the free flow of ideas by word and image, while broadening access to this information in order to:
Ensure the free flow of information conducive to advancement of societies and their democratic functioning
Help ensure equitable access to opportunities for sharing knowledge and promoting the creativity that technologies provide
Assist countries in building up their skills in communication and information; to improve infrastructures - media, libraries, archives, information services and networks - and to promote the training of professionals
Strategies
In striving to reach the programme goal, Communication and Information (CI) pursues the following strategies:
Promoting meetings for the cooperative development of projects and programmes
Fostering education and sustainable training in information science
Promoting Freedom of the Press - building on the advances in the region
Providing a visionary evaluation device
Forging institutional networks for research, workshops and seminars
Promoting electronic equipment for information service handling

13 May 2006 "Youth and Media" a UNESCO workshop in Beirut UNESCO Beirut Under the patronage of the Lebanese Minister of Information, Ghazi Aridi, UNESCO Beirut in cooperation with the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO and Saint George School, organized a two day training workshop ,May 12-13, 2006 for 60 young students from Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Tunisia and the Palestinian Territories. 13 May 2005 Workshop on Journalistic Ethics and Freedom of Expression in Beirut UNESCO Beirut in cooperation with the UNESCO Chair for communication at the Lebanese University and the Faculty of Media and Documentation at the University, opened a workshop on "Journalistic Ethics and Freedom of Expression" at Holiday Inn Hotel in Beirut. The one day workshop was organized under the framework of the Freedom of Expression programme at UNESCO Beirut, and was attended by some 35 graduate students from most Lebanese Universities and some media professionals.
Speakers at the sessions were media professionals and academics as well as some renowned reporters to speak about different aspects of this subject. Continuer |

25 Apr 2005 Prison Inmates in Lebanon Have a Better Future with IT Training UNESCO Beirut When the INTERNET started to spread, over 10 years ago and personal computers were booming, the inmates at Romieh Penitentiary in Lebanon were behind bars, with no possible access to neither. For most of them, new technologies and IT was some kind of a fantasy they could only see glimpses of on TV. Now things are changing at Romieh, the inmates have a library and a computer lab; they are training on different subjects, learning languages and more. 21 Mar 2005 Public Librarians Train at UNESCO Beirut on Specialized Software Some 20 Public Libraries from all the governorates of Lebanon, received from UNESCO Beirut specialized library software (WINISIS), which was distributed to them last week. Also 20 Librarians representing these libraries received intensive training during a workshop held to train them for this software at the UNESCO Office in Beirut on Saturday and Sunday 19-20 March for two days. This project comes under the framework of providing communities with free public access to information, knowledge and Information Communication Technology through enhancing the capabilities of public libraries.

22 Dec 2004 Workshop on "Safety of Journalists in Conflict Areas" concluded in Amman UNESCO Beirut Under the Patronage of the Jordanian Political Development Minister H.E. Mr. Munther Share' and within the framework of the Communication and Information Sector activities, and more specifically the “Freedom of Expression” division, a workshop on “Safety of Journalists in Conflict Areas” was organized in Amman 14-16 December, 2004. The three day workshop was done in collaboration among several UNESCO offices (Amman, Beirut, Ramallah, and HQ in Paris) and the Dialogue Conference Center, a Jordanian NGO.
As more journalists are being killed and targeted around the globe while on duty, there is an increasing importance for enhancing their practical skills of survival and dealing with hostile environments as they cover news in conflict areas. Continuer |

UNESCO/IPDC Experts’ Meeting on Media Development in the Arab Region Doha-Qatar 06 Dec 2004 - 08 Dec 2004 Arab media experts and professionals started a three day meeting in Doha, Qatar, to discuss media challenges facing the region. The meeting that was organized by UNESCO to help to identify priorities for fostering pluralist electronic and printed press and examine project proposals submitted by Arab countries to UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). UNESCO trains journalists for an independent and pluralistic media in Oman Mascat, Oman 12 Feb 2007 - 15 Feb 2007 Within this framework of UNESCO's pluralistic, independent and professional media, the UNESCO regional offices in Beirut, Doha and Cairo are organizing jointly a regional seminar on "Journalists for an Independent and Pluralistic media". The workshop is held in coordination with the Information Department, Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Sultan Qaboos University and the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science in Muscat.
