UNESCO - WORLD FOUNDATION FOR AIDS RESEARCH AND PREVENTION - INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND CARE OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES “LAZZARO SPALLANZANI”
Among the numerous activities presently being carried out by both UNESCO and the Italian CNR relevant to AIDS research and prevention, a significant agreement is being elaborated for the establishment of a research center for AIDS and other emerging and re-emerging infections between UNESCO, the World Foundation for AIDS Research and Prevention presided by Prof. L. Montagnier and the Institute for Research and Care of Infectious Diseases “Lazzaro Spallanzi” located in Rome, Italy.

The objectives of this Center will be to contribute to the progress of knowledge on epidemiology, control strategies and social impact of AIDS and other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases; contribute through scientific research on AIDS pathogenesis at molecular and cellular levels; promote the education and training of personnel involved with AIDS or other infectious diseases as well as to offer technical assistance to developing countries.
Once this Center is operational it will be associated within the framework of the worldwide network of the World Foundation and the European network “Man Against Virus”.

This agreement will be signed in early 1998 by the Director General of UNESCO, Prof. F. Mayor, the President of the World Foundation for AIDS Research and Prevention, Prof. L. Montagnier and by the High Commissioner of the Institute for Infectious Diseases “L. Spallanzani”, Mrs. Elda Melaragno.
