Moving towards Art, Design and Technology Teaching in the Arab States

Workshop on "Creation of Art, Design and Technology Master Classes in the Arab States" concluded in Linz (Austria)

DSC00030.jpg The cross-cultural currents which have given rise to Arabic and Islamic culture and elucidate the unique fusion between art and science which is the hallmark of the Islamic artistic tradition was underlined in a UNESCO DigiArts Workshop held on 4 – 5 September 2004 in Linz, Austria at the 25th Ars Electronica Festival. DigiArts is one of UNESCO’s major initiatives aiming at the development of interdisciplinary activities in research, creativity and communication in the field of media arts.

The workshop is preparing the way to the creation of masterclass modules in Art, Design and Technology in the Arab States in order to provide suitable opportunities for hands-on experience with information technology tools and media, and curricula that engage critical and theoretical issues relating to information technology and to information technology and creative practises. The workshop brought together educators from four subregions in the Arab region (Maghreb, Middle East, Gulf and Red Sea) as well as art education specialists in Europe showing how interregional and regional cooperation can play a fruitful role in capacity building in the information society.

The masterclass module will address specific needs within existing masterclass curricula, i.e. interactivity and virtual reality, in order to supplement a variety of existing masterclasses in new media, computer sciences and art. Students with diverse profiles will be targeted, but personal study-plans will be developed in order to address a variety of needs that students with different backgrounds might have, putting the students and their needs at the centre of the cours. Furthermore, the module will consist of face-to-face and e-learning sessions drawing on the experience and development of existing e-learning technologies in the region as well as in Europe.

Proposed institutional collaboration in the project was overwhelming and a Timeshift (the theme of the 25th anniversary of Ars Electronica) will see the reinforcement of existing creative practises in the Arab States, based on a regional and interregional collaborative effort of universities, schools and networks. The Austrian National Commission for UNESCO and Ars Electronica festival were key players in assisting UNESCO in extending the digital arts network to the Arab States and creating opportunities for capacity building in information technologies as emphasized in the Action Plan of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
