"Workshop for the urban management and rehabilitation of Saruja" in Damascus

UNESCO Division of Cultural Heritage assisted by UNESCO Beirut

Saruja.jpg The Culture unit of the Beirut Office is assisting the Division of Cultural Heritage at UNESCO Headquarters, in providing expertise to the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums of Syria, for the organization of a meeting entitled: "Workshop for the urban management and rehabilitation of Saruja" to be held on 8-9 June 2004 in Damascus. Saruja is one of the ancient quarters located within the buffer zone of the Old City World Heritage Site, hosting historical monuments such as mosques, traditional baths, houses, etc. mainly from the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, damaged by decades of modern urban planning.
Four high level international experts will contribute to the discussions with representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the Directorate of Antiquities, the Ministry of Tourism, the University of Damascus-Faculty of Architecture, and the Municipality of Damascus, in order to come up with a set of recommendations towards the preservation, up-grading and revitalization of this quarter of the city, inscribed as National Heritage since 2003.
