The UNESCO Office for the Caribbean, in partnership with the OECS Secretariat and the Education Development Centre, will host a special leadership meeting for Ministers of Education on Advocacy and Leadership in HIV & AIDS and Education, on 27 January, 2007 in Roseau, Dominica.

The one-day retreat is scheduled to take place at the Fort Young Hotel, commencing at 9:00 am with welcoming addresses by Dr. Kwame Boafo, Director of the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean and Dr. Vasantha Chase, Director of the Social and Sustainable Development Division of the OECS Secretariat. The opening ceremony will be followed by presentations and interactive exercises conducted by representatives from the Education Development Centre, Education International, the International Labour Organization and the Caribbean Network of Seropositives.

The meeting aims to engage Ministers of Education in dialogue on the need and importance of developing a comprehensive response to HIV and AIDS in the education sector through policy development, including addressing issues of stigma and discrimination.

UNESCO is the United Nations agency with the lead role in promoting good practice in the response to HIV & AIDS through the education systems, as identified in the Global Initiative on HIV/AIDS and Education, EDUCAIDS. The initiative aims to support countries as they plan education sector-based responses to HIV/AIDS in tandem with efforts towards Education for All, the Millennium Development Goals and the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2015).

The Caribbean has the second highest HIV incidence in the world behind sub-Saharan Africa according to UNAIDS (2006 report).
