A spiritual connection with elements like water is a primary force in the life of a Shinto priest. An 11th century ceremony of purification is preserved by Shinto initiates of modern Japan. These priest-to-be are being led in a chant in which they ask the nature gods to cleanse their souls and bodies so they can be worthy of the priesthood.
