The visible action in baptism is immersion in water, which is a symbol of both death and new life. Baptism is observed in churches and along riverbanks all over the world. A sit on the Jordan River in Israel continues to be the most holy of all baptism sites. The tradition states that it was here that Jesus chose to be anointed by John the Baptists.
