International conference on Freshwater Management, where Sarawak could showcase its initiatives in freshwater management as well as providing a forum for international inputs on water issues and problems.
This conference, organised jointly by Sarawak Rivers Board and Sarawak Development Institute (SDI), is also in line with the United Nations' call for support to its declaration of 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater to increase awareness of the importance of sustainable freshwater use, management and protection.
Objectives are:
1. To provide a forum to discuss on advances in freshwater use, management and protection;
2. To discuss and share experiences on water issues;
3. To suggest strategies to address freshwater resources management.
Scope of conference topics:
1. Basic and conflicting uses of freshwater (water supply, sanitation, transportation)
2. Protecting ecosystems
3. Trends in integrated water management (sharing water resources, international cooperation)
4. Managing risks (floods, droughts, climatic change)
5. Governance (policies, institutions, community participation)
