Droughts
Between 1991 and 2000, droughts became both more frequent and more severe. They accounted for 11% of the 2,200 water-related natural disasters recorded over that period, and caused the deaths of over 280,000 people.

Human activities, especially irrigation, have modified the course of rivers and led to excessive water pumping, provoking or worsening droughts in arid regions worldwide. Deforestation, which prevents the soil from storing water during the rainy season, is also an important factor in desertification.
